My philosophy towards language instruction is simple:
I believe that adults learn languages differently than children. In the beginning of our lessons I introduce concepts mainly in English. As knowledge increases, we focus more on applying the concepts of the language through speaking drills and conversation, all the while concentrating on building useful vocabulary and refining proper sentence construction. Ultimately the goal is for the student to feel comfortable and confident when speaking, reading and writing in Italian.
Learning a new language later in life is one of the most challenging things we can do, but it is also extremely rewarding and can be a lot of fun. I create an environment in which students can feel comfortable making mistakes and I encourage them to truly enjoy themselves while overcoming any hesitation or fear about speaking a foreign language.
Once a month students also meet in an informal gathering at various restaurants around Chicago in order to apply their instruction to real life conversations and just have fun. We strive to speak Italian only in this group. There is no charge for participating in the meeting. Just bring yourself and be prepared to learn in the most efficient way possible: through conversation.
